Boost your autophagy with intermittent fasting

Have you ever heard of autophagy? This fascinating biological process plays a crucial role in our body. And here's the thing: we can deliberately stimulate it through fasting! But let's start from the beginning: what is autophagy and why is this process so important for our health? How can we optimise it naturally and what does fasting have to do with it? You'll find out all of it in this article!

What is autophagy?

Autophagy, literally translated "self-eating", describes a cellular cleaning mechanism in which our cells break down and recycle defective organelles, proteins and other cellular components.

Put very simply, autophagy is a recycling plant inside each of your cells. It makes sure your cells stay healthy and functional.

The process of self-digestion, or self-cleaning:

  1. The cell (A) wraps a special membrane around the components (B) that are to be broken down
  2. The membrane closes to form the autophagosome (C)
  3. The autophagosome fuses with lysosomes, tiny vesicles containing enzymes (D)
  4. The lysosomes inside split up the components to be recycled and break them down
  5. This produces nutrients, such as amino acids and lipids, that can be rebuilt into something new or used to generate energy. Products that can no longer be used are carried away and excreted.

This is why autophagy is so important

We can't stress enough how important autophagy is for our health! It's an incredibly useful result of evolution, designed to remove defective structures and even gain energy and nutrients from them. This self-cleaning allows your body to dispose of

- unused,

- dead or especially old,

- faulty,

- diseased and potentially disease-causing

proteins, entire cell components, as well as bacteria and viruses.

Alongside this, of course, there is the classic renewal of body cells and organs. The advantage of autophagy, though, is that it can run many times faster and more flexibly: while the usual formation of new cells can take days to years, autophagy for a given substance is complete after just 24 hours.

Autophagy is therefore crucial for the rejuvenation and regeneration of our cells! When we have a cold, autophagy helps us get back on our feet quickly. It also plays an important role in stress responses and in embryonic development. Impaired or reduced autophagy appears to be linked to numerous serious conditions such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Potential downsides of autophagy

Although autophagy is vital for general health and wellbeing, there are also potential downsides and risks that we naturally don't want to keep from you:

Muscle loss due to autophagy

Autophagy can't tell healthy cells from unhealthy ones. In some cases, this can lead to a certain amount of muscle loss, especially if the body can't get enough energy from other sources such as fat tissue. That's why we don't recommend fasting cleanses of more than 10 days without medical supervision, and why the longest stretch we offer is our 7-day cleanse. We also advise people who are underweight against fasting cleanses.

Weakened immune system due to autophagy

Although autophagy helps clear away damaged cells and pathogens, an excessive autophagy process could also lead to a temporary weakening of the immune system. It's similar to sport! Exercise is short-term stress for your body and weakens your immune system. That's why we recommend fasting only when you're healthy, and postponing the cleanse if an infection is coming on.

Nutrient deficiency due to autophagy

With longer fasting cleanses there is a risk of nutrient deficiency, since the body receives only very limited food over an extended period. This could worsen a deficiency in important vitamins, minerals and other nutrients if you already had one before the cleanse. During our 3-, 5- or 7-day cleanses you can keep taking your usual food supplements, or even add our Daily Complete with vitamins, minerals and secondary plant compounds.

5 tips to get your autophagy going in everyday life

There are various everyday habits that can stimulate autophagy naturally. Here are some simple ways to support it:

Regular exercise boosts autophagy

Physical activity isn't just good for your general health and wellbeing, it can also stimulate autophagy. Regular training gets your metabolism going, which in turn supports the autophagy process.

Enough sleep boosts autophagy

Restful sleep is crucial for the body's regeneration. During sleep, various repair mechanisms are activated, including autophagy. Make sure you get enough sleep to give your body time to recover and regenerate.

A healthy diet boosts autophagy

A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and phytonutrients can support autophagy by giving the cells the nutrients they need. Avoid eating too much sugar and processed foods, as these can inhibit the autophagy process.

Effective stress management boosts autophagy

Chronic stress can have a negative effect on the autophagy process. That's why it's important to reduce stress and build relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga or breathing exercises into your everyday life.

Hydration boosts autophagy

Drinking enough water is important for metabolism and cell function. Good hydration supports autophagy and normal metabolism.

By building these healthy habits into your everyday life, you can promote autophagy naturally and so support the health and wellbeing of your body.

What you need to know about autophagy during fasting

This is why more autophagy happens during fasting

Basically, more autophagy occurs during fasting because your body is put into a state of nutrient shortage. When no food is taken in, blood sugar and insulin levels in the body drop. As a result, your body starts to fall back on stored energy reserves to meet its energy needs. This state, in which the body draws on fat reserves and other energy stores, is called ketosis.

During fasting, cells are therefore forced to rely on other sources of energy and building materials. Autophagy is one of the strategies cells use to maintain and repair themselves when they have no access to new nutrients. By breaking down defective cell components, damaged proteins and other unusable molecules, cells can gain energy during fasting while cleaning and regenerating themselves at the same time.

In addition, fasting also regulates the production of certain hormones and proteins that further drive the autophagy process. In particular, the hormone glucagon is released in greater amounts, which promotes the breakdown of glycogen and fat and stimulates autophagy.

Overall, fasting is a natural stimulus for autophagy, allowing the body to clean, regenerate and renew itself at the cellular level, which can lead to better health and greater wellbeing in the long term. That said, we should mention that the effects can vary depending on individual circumstances as well as the type and length of the fasting cleanse you do.

The difference in autophagy between multi-day fasting cleanses and intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting actually affects autophagy a little differently from multi-day fasting cleanses!

Intermittent fasting: With intermittent fasting you alternate between eating periods and fasting periods. Typical methods are 16/8 fasting, where you fast for 16 hours a day and eat within an 8-hour window, or 5:2 fasting, where on two days a week you only eat certain meals. Do you already know our 5:2 intermittent fasting programme? Intermittent fasting means your body regularly switches into autophagy mode.

Multi-day fasting cleanses: Multi-day fasting cleanses involve fasting for longer periods of time, typically 3, 5 or 7 days in a row. Examples are our juice cleanse, soup cleanse or food cleanse. During multi-day fasting cleanses the body is put into a deeper state of ketosis, which leads to stronger activation of autophagy. Studies have shown that longer fasting periods can bring about a significant increase in autophagy activity in the body.

All in all, you could say that both intermittent fasting and multi-day fasting cleanses can stimulate autophagy, but in different ways and with different intensity. Which method to choose depends on your individual goals, preferences and health needs. Some people find it easier to fit intermittent fasting into their everyday life, while others may prefer the benefits of longer fasting cleanses. It's important to adapt the method to your own needs and feel comfortable with it.

frank. conclusion on autophagy through fasting

Autophagy is a fascinating biological process that is of crucial importance for the health and function of our cells. By breaking down and recycling defective organelles, proteins and other cellular components, autophagy contributes to the cleaning and regeneration of our cells. This process is essential for the rejuvenation and renewal of our body and may play a role in supporting the body against various diseases.

Fasting is an effective way to stimulate autophagy. During fasting, your body is put into a state of nutrient shortage, which can increase autophagy activity. Both intermittent fasting and multi-day fasting cleanses can promote this process, although longer fasting periods can bring about a more intense activation of autophagy.

Keep in mind that autophagy can also have potential downsides, such as muscle loss, a temporary weakening of the immune system and nutrient deficiency during longer fasting cleanses. So you should always fast responsibly and under competent guidance. We at frank. are happy to guide you along the way.
