Healthy vs. unhealthy snacks

None of us can really do without a snack. So, in honour of Muffin Day, we thought we'd talk about snacks. What are healthy snacks, and which ones should you steer clear of? What makes snacks unhealthy, and what alternatives are there? At the end, to mark the occasion, there's a tasty healthy muffin recipe.

Why do we snack?

Snacks are small in-between meals that we eat for various reasons. Often it's pure habit: serving something sweet at a coffee afternoon or eating popcorn at the cinema just goes together. But it can also be a little hunger. If you take your lunch break at 12 and work until 6, you have almost no choice but to reach for a snack or two in the meantime.

The dangers of snacking

Since snacks don't really fill you up, there's a risk of eating more than you wanted or should. You eat a bar or a sandwich and take in unhealthy calories. Not even half an hour later, your stomach is growling again and the next bar isn't long in coming. Your body gets sugar again and again, and then in the evening there's another big dinner. That's why it's important to pay attention to what kind of snacks you eat between meals.

What's different about healthy snacks

Healthy snacks are mainly characterised by plenty of vitamins and fibre. Your body doesn't just feel full, it also gets a portion of vitamin C or protein that it can put to good use. Here are a few healthy snack alternatives:

For those with a sweet tooth

If you prefer sweet to salty, there are lots of tasty snack ideas with fruit. For example, low-fat quark, chia pudding or skyr yoghurt can be topped with fruit and a little honey. It's not only wonderfully refreshing but, especially the chia pudding, gives your body plenty of nutrients. Or you can simply throw your favourite fruit in the blender and make yourself a tasty smoothie. There are also lots of delicious healthy cake recipes. Here you'll find, fitting for today's Muffin Day, a tasty carrot muffin.

Prefer savoury?

... no problem! There are healthy snacks for in between for the savoury fans among us, too. Crispbread with avocado and egg is very popular, or a tasty vegetable spread. If you need something quicker, you can simply chop up your favourite vegetables and dip them. That's great when you need something to nibble on the side.

Movie night works without crisps too

Yes, we know, a good film just needs something to nibble on, but it doesn't always have to be greasy crisps or puffs. For example, you can make salted popcorn. Many people don't know that it's a healthier alternative to greasy snacks. Nuts are also great to eat on the sofa. But careful! There shouldn't be too many, as they have a certain amount of fat in them too. If you're more of a gummy bear type, you can reach for dried fruit, for example. Frozen fruit like bananas or frozen berries can also be delicious for satisfying a craving for sweet things.

Breathe easy!

Even with a healthy, conscious diet, you don't have to give up snacks and sweet things. There are lots of healthy snack alternatives that bring at least as much joy. When you need something really quick, our juices also work as a little snack for in between.

P.S. Don't forget to try the muffin recipe. You'll thank us for it.
