In short: You can make beetroot juice with a juicer from raw beets, or without a juicer in a blender with a sieve. For one glass you need about 1 to 2 medium beets, ideally with apple, carrot or orange for sweetness. The NHS advises limiting juice and smoothies together to 150 ml a day, so a small glass is enough. As of: October 2026.
Beetroot tastes earthy and turns everything pink. Here you'll find five recipes, with and without a juicer, plus tips to keep your kitchen and hands clean.
How do you make beetroot juice yourself?
With a juicer, you peel or scrub the beets, cut them into pieces and run them through the machine. Without a juicer, you blend the pieces with a little water in a blender and pour everything through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. Both work; with a juicer the juice is clearer.
The basic quantity: two medium beets (approx. 400 g) give you a small glass of juice if you work without water. With the blender method and water, a bit more comes out, and it tastes milder.
Whichever method you choose: work cleanly and use only fresh, undamaged beets. Remove soil thoroughly, because it clings to the skin. If it's your first time juicing, it's best to start with the classic with apple, because the taste is familiar. After that, you can work your way up to ginger, lemon or cucumber. Make a note of the quantities you like so you can recreate the juice exactly next time.
Which 5 recipes work even for beginners?
All recipes make approx. 250 to 300 ml. Split the amount between two small glasses or drink it over the day. The quantities are guidelines, so try and adjust.
| Recipe | Ingredients | With / without juicer |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Classic | 2 beets, 1 apple | both |
| 2. Orange-ginger | 1 beet, 2 oranges, 1 cm ginger | Juicer or blender and sieve |
| 3. Carrot-beet | 1 beet, 3 carrots, lemon juice | Juicer |
| 4. Mild blender version | 1 cooked beet, 1 apple, 100 ml water | blender only |
| 5. Lemon-cucumber | 1 beet, 1/2 cucumber, 1 lemon | both |
For recipe 4, boil the beet until soft beforehand, which makes the taste less earthy. Cooked beetroot from a vacuum pack without additives works too.
How do you make recipe 1 and recipe 4 step by step?
Recipe 1, classic with a juicer: Wash 2 beets and 1 apple thoroughly and cut both into pieces that fit the feed chute. Juice the apple first, then the beetroot, so the mild apple juice rinses through the leftovers. Stir briefly and drink the juice chilled.
Recipe 4, mild in the blender: Boil 1 beet in water until soft. Let the beet cool, then peel it. Put it in the blender with 1 apple in pieces and 100 ml of water and blend for 1 to 2 minutes. Pour the juice through a fine sieve or cheesecloth, press down with a spoon and pour it into a glass. For extra freshness, add a squeeze of lemon juice.
Small mistakes happen easily: too much beetroot in relation to the fruit makes the juice heavy and earthy, over-boiled beets taste bland, and warm juice tastes flat. Start with a ratio of about 1 beet to 1 apple and feel your way from there.
How much beetroot juice can you drink per day?
A small glass is enough. The NHS advises limiting the total amount of fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies to 150 ml a day. More than one portion doesn't count additionally towards your 5 a day, because pressing releases sugar from the cell structure, which is harder on your teeth.
The NHS also recommends drinking juice with meals rather than in between. You can read more about effects and possible side effects in the article How Healthy Is Beetroot Juice?
With or without a juicer: what's the difference?
A juicer separates juice from fibre, so the juice is thin and clear. In a blender, more fibre stays in if you don't sieve. That's then more of a smoothie. With a sieve, you get something in between.
| Method | Result | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Juicer | clear, thin, little fibre | Cleaning the machine |
| Blender without sieve | thick smoothie, more fibre | low |
| Blender with sieve | soft, little fibre | medium |
A practical note: you can reuse the pulp for bread dough, muffins or as an ingredient in veggie patties. To do that, dry it out briefly.
How do you avoid stains and an earthy taste?
Beetroot stains heavily. Wear gloves or rub your hands with a little lemon juice. A plastic chopping board takes on colour, so use a wooden board or put baking paper underneath.
- Earthy taste: peel the beet thoroughly or use very fresh, small ones.
- Acidity: lemon or orange balance out the earthiness.
- Sweetness: apple or carrot make the juice milder.
- Cold: drink the juice chilled, and it tastes fresher.
A small note: beetroot can turn urine or stool reddish. That's harmless if you know where it comes from. If you have kidney disease, kidney stones or other pre-existing conditions, talk to your doctor before consuming it regularly.
How long does homemade beetroot juice keep?
It tastes best freshly squeezed. We can't give a reliable number of days from verified sources, so: store it airtight and chilled and drink it promptly, ideally the same day. Without pasteurisation or high pressure, fresh juices spoil faster than shop-bought ones.
You can read how this is handled for ready-made juices in the article What Does HPP Juice Mean? For Juice Cleanses, you'll find instructions in the article Make Your Own Juice Cleanse.
A worked example on effort: if you want to squeeze a glass fresh every day, you need roughly 7 to 14 beets per week. That fits into a small weekly shop, but it's time-consuming. For many people, an occasional weekend experiment is more realistic.
A shopping tip: small beets are often milder and sweeter than large ones. You can wash the greens and steam them like spinach; they don't belong in the juice if you want to keep the flavour mild.
If you have guests, serve small glasses: the juice is intense in colour and flavour, and a small portion is plenty. That also makes the NHS amount recommendation fit into everyday life.
