In short: Ginger Shot powder is inexpensive, long-lasting and quickly stirred together, but tastes different from freshly pressed ginger. Fresh ginger contains mainly gingerols, dried ginger more shogaols. For everyday use, studies mostly used 500 to 1,500 mg of ginger per day, and up to 4 g is considered harmless for most people. As of October 2026.

Powder, fresh root or ready-made shot? We compare the three routes by effort, taste, shelf life and cost per serving.

What's the difference between ginger powder and fresh ginger?

Fresh ginger contains mainly gingerols; dried ginger contains more shogaols. Healthline names 6-shogaol as the main source of antioxidant properties in dried ginger.

That doesn't mean one form is better. It means: they differ in heat, aroma and composition. Powder tastes drier, more warm and spicy; fresh ginger fruity and hot. For shots, fresh ginger suits the taste better; powder is the easier fallback when there's no root in the house.

How do a powder shot, a fresh shot and a frank. shot differ?

The table shows the three routes in everyday life. Figures on frank. come from our product page; the other columns are rule-of-thumb values.

Criterion Powder shot Self-pressed frank. Organic Shot
Effort 1 minute 10 to 15 minutes 0 minutes
Shelf life Powder keeps long when dry, mixed shot the same day A few days in the fridge Chilled about 7 days after delivery
Taste Spicy, earthy Fresh, hot Ginger, turmeric, pepper, orange
Ingredients Only powder and liquid What you put in Ginger, turmeric, pepper, orange, echinacea, acerola
Price Powder from a few cents per serving Varies with the price of ginger €2.50 per shot

Prices for powder and root vary greatly by provider. So it's best to calculate with the price you see in the shop (see example below).

How much ginger per day makes sense?

There is no official daily amount, but there are guide values. Healthline reports studies with 500 mg per day over three months, 1,000 mg over two months and 1,500 mg over six weeks. According to Healthline, the FDA considers up to 4 g of ginger per day harmless. For nausea, Healthline mostly names 1,000 to 1,500 mg daily, spread across several portions. More than 1,500 mg doesn't work better there and can cause more side effects.

In practice for a powder shot: start with a small amount, about a pinch to half a teaspoon, and watch how your stomach reacts. That's our suggestion, not a dose recommendation, and it doesn't apply to people with pre-existing conditions or on medication. According to the NCCIH, stomach complaints, heartburn, diarrhoea and irritation in the mouth can occur.

How much does a serving cost? A worked example

Work it out yourself: pack price divided by the number of servings. An example with assumptions so the logic is clear: a pack of ginger powder with 100 g costs €6. A serving of 1 g means 100 servings, so 6 cents per shot, plus lemon or orange for roughly 20 to 30 cents.

Option Calculation Price per serving
Powder shot (assumption 100 g for €6) €6 / 100 + lemon approx. €0.30
frank. Immunity Shot, single €2.50 per shot €2.50
frank. shot in a 7-pack €18 / 7 approx. €2.57

As of October 2026. The assumption for the powder is a fictional example, not the price of a particular product. The price difference is big; in return, with the ready-made shot you save time, kitchen leftovers and pressing work. An honest decision aid: if you drink it daily and like mixing your own, powder is much cheaper. If you use the shot as an occasional start to the day, you pay for convenience and chilled freshness. Both routes are fine; the choice depends mainly on your time.

How do I stir up a Ginger Shot with powder?

A simple recipe for one serving of about 100 ml:

  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder (about a gram; the amount depends on the powder)
  • Juice of half a lemon or an orange
  • 80 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 pinch of pepper (optional)

Stir everything together and drink immediately, because powder settles after a while. If you like it milder, top up with water. Fresh ginger can be steeped in slices if no juicer is to hand. You'll find recipes with a blender in Ginger Shot in the Thermomix.

What do I look for when buying ginger powder?

We haven't tested individual drugstore or supermarket products and so don't rate brands. This checklist still helps you compare on the shelf:

  • Ingredient list: It should contain only ginger, with no sugar, fillers or flavourings.
  • Organic label: If you care about organic, it has to say so on the packaging.
  • Pack size: Small tins are pricier per gram, big ones lose aroma over time.
  • Packaging: Store airtight, dry and dark, otherwise powder clumps.
  • Smell: Fresh ginger powder smells distinctly hot and spicy; musty is a bad sign.

And one more practical tip: if you want to test powder in small amounts, buy a small pack first. Also check the best-before date. If you notice after two weeks that you really do drink the shot every day, the big one is worth it.

Which variations taste good?

Powder shots quickly taste one-note. With these additions it becomes rounder, each for one serving:

Variation Ingredients Taste
Citrus 1/2 tsp ginger powder, juice of half a lemon, 80 ml water Fresh, sour
Orange 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 80 ml orange juice, pinch of pepper Mild, fruity
Gold 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric, pepper, lemon Warm, spicy
Warm 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 150 ml hot water, lemon Tea-like, gentle

The pepper is optional. You don't need sweetness; honey changes the calorie balance and doesn't suit every plan. Healthline points out that honey and fruit juice add sugar in shot recipes.

Who is a Ginger Shot not suitable for?

During pregnancy, you should discuss larger amounts of ginger with your doctor. Healthline advises this, and the NCCIH says ginger supplements in pregnancy are possibly safe but should be clarified individually. If you take blood thinners, you should avoid ginger capsules, says Healthline. With blood sugar medication, caution is advised, as is with a known allergy.

In a ready-made shot, further ingredients come in. The frank. Organic Shot Immunity contains, for example, echinacea and acerola, so pay attention to your tolerance.

Matching picks from frank.

If you don't feel like pressing or stirring: the Organic Ginger Shot Immunity has ginger, turmeric, pepper, orange, echinacea and acerola, cold-pressed in a 95 ml bottle, €2.50 per shot (as of October 2026). As a box of 7 you can get it for €18 at Ginger Turmeric Shot.
