In short: Apple cider vinegar as a weight-loss miracle is a social media hype. The Verbraucherzentrale writes: there is no proven benefit for apple cider vinegar supplements, an often-cited study was retracted because of poor quality, and a 2025 meta-analysis found only a minimal effect on weight. As a salad ingredient, apple cider vinegar is harmless; for teeth and stomach, caution is advised.
A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water every morning, and the kilos melt away? That's how it was told online. We checked what's behind the trend and how you can put it into perspective without risk.
Does apple cider vinegar help with weight loss?
Hardly, according to the current evidence. The Verbraucherzentrale makes clear that claims about weight loss from apple cider vinegar are not scientifically proven. A 2025 meta-analysis found that regular apple cider vinegar consumption may slightly lower body weight and BMI, but the effect was minimal.
The Verbraucherzentrale also points out that results with liquid vinegar can't be transferred to powder capsules. If you want to lose weight, you're better advised with a deficit and exercise; see Calculating a Calorie Deficit.
What about the study from Lebanon?
A study from Lebanon was widely cited as proof in 2024: participants lost clearly more weight after 12 weeks with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water. The Verbraucherzentrale writes that this study has since been retracted because of poor quality.
The Verbraucherzentrale describes studies from the region as poor overall, with contradictory results and too short a duration. It remains open whether the apple cider vinegar itself or just the acetic acid has an effect and whether the effect mainly suppresses appetite.
What risks does apple cider vinegar have?
| Risk | What's behind it |
|---|---|
| Tooth enamel | Acids can attack the enamel; don't brush your teeth immediately afterwards |
| Stomach and oesophagus | drunk neat, vinegar can irritate, so dilute it |
| Raw apple cider vinegar | according to the Verbraucherzentrale, has repeatedly been the cause of infections with E. coli and cryptosporidia |
| Liver | with regular intake, get it checked by a doctor |
The Verbraucherzentrale considers apple cider vinegar harmless as a salad ingredient and considers capsules unnecessary. If you drink it, dilute it heavily and use a straw.
How do you use apple cider vinegar sensibly?
In the kitchen: for dressings, marinades, pickled vegetables. A salad with a vinegar dressing is a good meal, not because vinegar burns fat, but because salad fills you up and has little energy. That's the real lever.
- Dressing made of apple cider vinegar, oil, mustard and herbs on salad
- Lentil or potato salad with vinegar instead of mayonnaise
- Pickled vegetables as a side
- As a drink only diluted and not daily in large amounts
What helps with weight loss instead?
The basics that the NHS and Verbraucherzentrale also name: a moderate calorie deficit of 500 to 600 kcal per day, replacing sugary drinks, regular meals, 150 minutes of exercise a week and enough sleep. That sounds less spectacular but it works.
You'll find concrete weekly plans in the Meal Plan for Weight Loss, and everyday tips in the Basic Rules of Weight Loss.
How does apple cider vinegar fare against the basics?
The comparison shrinks the hype. A moderate deficit of 500 to 600 kcal per day, as described by the Verbraucherzentrale and the NHS, leads to about 0.5 to 1 kg of weight loss per week. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, the effect of apple cider vinegar in the 2025 meta-analysis was minimal.
| Measure | Evidence | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate calorie deficit | NHS and Verbraucherzentrale | medium, but effective |
| Replacing sugary drinks | NHS 12 tips | low |
| 150 minutes of exercise a week | NHS activity recommendation | medium |
| Apple cider vinegar | minimal effect, weak studies | low, with risks |
If you like apple cider vinegar anyway, use it as a flavour in salad and don't expect anything magical.
What do the studies say about the amount?
The studies cited online mostly involved a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass of water over several weeks. No meaningful dose recommendations can be drawn from them, because according to the Verbraucherzentrale the studies were poor, contradictory and too short. If you still want to try it, stick to small amounts and watch how you tolerate it.
If you get symptoms like heartburn, stomach pain or tooth sensitivity, stop. A tablespoon of vinegar in the salad dressing is entirely enough for the flavour.
How do you deal with trends?
With curiosity and distance. Try what you like and what doesn't harm you, but don't rely on individual products. If you want to build a habit, pick one that measurably brings something: for example a glass of water before eating, a walk after dinner or one fewer sugary drink a day.
For two weeks, note what you want to change and check whether you manage it. That tells you more than any trend.
Who should avoid apple cider vinegar?
People with stomach problems, heartburn, swallowing difficulties, tooth erosion and liver complaints, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, shouldn't drink apple cider vinegar without medical advice. If you take medication, such as for diabetes, ask at your practice beforehand too, because vinegar can affect blood sugar.
Especially with heartburn, other drinks are better; see Heartburn: What to Drink?
How do you tell hype from facts?
Check whether a claim rests on a single study, whether the study was retracted, who paid for it and whether there is a meta-analysis. Sentences like "kilos melt away overnight" should make you suspicious. Reputable sources speak about probabilities and small effects.
The principle applies to all trends: if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
