Burn Your Calories II: can foods boost your metabolism?

We've already covered what metabolism is and how it works in an earlier post. We also touched on the fact that the food we eat can give our metabolism a boost. In this post, we go into more detail.

Reminder: how metabolism works

In short: metabolism takes place within our cells and is the basis for all chemical processes in our body. The breakdown and conversion of nutrients is controlled by hormones and enzymes.

There are also three different types: carbohydrate metabolism, protein metabolism and fat metabolism. In each case, the individual macronutrients are broken down and turned into energy or storage forms. This is exactly where what you eat comes into play.

Which foods boost metabolism the most?

If you want to get your metabolism going, exercise and sport are always the most effective route! But your diet can also stimulate your metabolism in its own special way:

Heat:

Ginger, chilli and co. are THE metabolism boosters. With the heat from natural plant compounds like capsaicin, they not only get your metabolism going, they're also good for digestion and can help curb your appetite. Since it's not always easy to work these foods into your meal plan, our shots and juices are the perfect solution. Our ginger shots don't just have the classic spicy ginger taste, they also come with things like tasty raspberry or activated charcoal.

Fruit and veg:

Whether you're vegan, omnivore or paleo: fruit and vegetables belong in every way of eating! Lemons, spinach, avocado and broccoli are particularly metabolically active. Lemons, broccoli and spinach contain a lot of vitamin C, which speeds up the metabolism of fat. Spinach also has other important nutrients such as zinc and iron. And broccoli scores with its high potassium content. In our juices you'll find plenty of lemon and spinach. If you don't have those on hand right now, just treat yourself to our green, yellow or golden juice!

Chocolate, almonds, coffee and cinnamon

Tasty treats can also help get your metabolism going.

Coffee contains niacin and caffeine. These substances give your metabolism a slight nudge and can therefore increase your energy expenditure. If you fancy something sweet, you can reach for dark chocolate! The spice cinnamon also contains antioxidants, which help keep the body free of radicals and may help lower your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Of all the nuts, almonds probably give your metabolism the biggest boost! They're full of unsaturated fatty acids and fibre.
You can combine all of these in a porridge, for example. Or you can pick up our white juice, which contains almonds, cinnamon and lemon.

What slows down metabolism?

Just as some foods boost your metabolism, others slow it down.
These are mainly foods with lots of carbohydrates. Pasta, alcohol, sweets and soft drinks are the usual suspects. But here too, the dose makes the difference! For example, you can combine your pasta with broccoli or spinach.

Boost your metabolism with frank juice

Some of our juices, shots, teas and soups contain ingredients that can give your metabolism an extra boost. A whole juice cleanse can also help you find balance in your body: by going without conventional food, you'll experience food much more intensely again after your fasting cleanse.
