Table with juice glasses, glass of water, herbal tea and a bowl of clear vegetable broth

In short: During a Juice Cleanse you drink only juices, plus water, unsweetened tea and, if needed, a little vegetable broth. Solid food is not part of it. If you need coffee, then black, without milk (including plant-based milk) and without sugar, ideally one cup in the morning. You leave out alcohol and nicotine. As of: October 2026.

The question "What can I eat during the Juice Cleanse?" can be answered briefly: nothing solid. What you can drink instead, how to deal with hunger and where the limits are is explained in this article. How it continues afterwards is in the article on Eating After a Juice Cleanse.

Can you eat anything on a Juice Cleanse?

No, a classic Juice Cleanse goes without solid meals. You fast for several days in a row and take in only juices alongside water, tea and broth during that time. That gives your digestive tract a break, and you don't have to plan, shop or cook.

You don't have to go hungry. With the 3-Day Juice Cleanse you drink six juices a day, about one every two hours. Depending on intensity, the juices provide between 650 and 845 kilocalories per fasting day (Starter 845, Medium 736, Pro 650). A Juice Cleanse is therefore a calorie-reduced time out and not a zero-calorie diet.

What can you drink during the Juice Cleanse?

Anything that supports you without providing sugar or calories is allowed. The following overview summarises what fits with a Juice Cleanse.

Drink How much Note
Juices 6 per day, about every 2 hours Order according to the cleanse guide
Water 2 to 3 litres Spread over the day
Unsweetened tea as you like Herbal tea warm or cold, also green tea
Vegetable broth if needed, one to two cups Helps with tiredness or cravings
Black coffee If necessary, one cup in the morning Black, without milk of any kind and without sugar

You'll find more ideas for tea in the article Tea for Fasting.

Can you drink coffee during a Juice Cleanse?

Yes, if you need it: our recommendation is black coffee without milk and without sugar, ideally one cup in the morning. It doesn't harm the Juice Cleanse, may dampen appetite a little and prevents withdrawal headaches if you're used to a lot of coffee every day. Milk of any kind, including oat or other plant-based milk, and sugar don't belong in the cup.

If you're looking for alternatives anyway: green tea contains less caffeine. A day with less coffee before the cleanse makes the start easier. More on this in the article Coffee, Nicotine and Alcohol on a Juice Cleanse.

What is off limits during the Juice Cleanse?

Off limits are solid food, sugar, alcohol and nicotine. Alcohol strains the liver, which has to break it down, and contradicts the point of the cleanse. You also give up nicotine during this time so that your body can really come to rest.

Additional juices and smoothies from the supermarket are not part of it either, because they often contain added sugar and shift the rhythm of the cleanse. Stick to the juices in your cleanse.

What helps against hunger and cravings?

Usually a glass of water or tea, a cup of vegetable broth and distraction are enough. Hunger and cravings show up mainly on the first and second day, when body and mind miss sugar and caffeine. They usually fade quickly.

Helpful are a walk in the fresh air, gentle yoga, a phone call or a warm broth. You'll find more tips in the article Cravings While Fasting. If you find that solid food is part of it for you, the Soup Cleanse is an alternative with warm soups.

How do you prepare for what you eat and drink?

Plan at least one lead-in day before the cleanse. The day before, gradually give up coffee, alcohol, sugar, meat and heavily processed food and eat light, plant-based food, soups and plenty of water instead. That way your body slowly gets used to the reduced food intake.

After the cleanse, you slowly reintroduce solid food: first soups, steamed vegetables and fruit. You'll find the steps in the article Juice Cleanse Preparation.
