In short: With 5:2 intermittent fasting, you eat normally five days a week and only about 500 kcal (women) or 600 kcal (men) on two non-consecutive days. It's best to space the fasting days apart, for example Monday and Thursday. The method is unsuitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with eating disorders or diabetes, or only makes sense after medical consultation. As of: October 2026.
5:2 is the method for anyone who prefers to plan weekdays rather than clock times. Here you'll find a guide, fasting-day ideas with a calorie budget and the most common pitfalls.
How does 5:2 intermittent fasting work?
The rule is quickly explained: on five days of the week you eat as you're used to, and on two days you greatly reduce your energy intake. Healthline and the Cleveland Clinic give 500 to 600 calories for this. The Cleveland Clinic assigns 500 kcal to women and 600 kcal to men.
There are no bans on the normal days, but a balanced diet still makes sense. If you overeat on the five days to compensate, you lose the effect of the fasting days. With the calorie calculator, you can work out your daily needs.
Which days suit the fasting days?
Choose two days with as little stress as possible and don't put them back to back. Dietitian Julia Zumpano of the Cleveland Clinic recommends separating the fasting days as much as possible, with at least one, ideally two to three normal days in between.
| Weekly model | Fasting days | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| A | Monday and Thursday | Office job, sport at the weekend |
| B | Tuesday and Friday | If you have lots of appointments on Mondays |
| C | Wednesday and Saturday | If you want a quiet weekend |
Avoid fasting days with intense training, long journeys or important decisions. A walk instead of interval training is the better choice on these days. You'll find more on exercise in Exercise While Fasting.
How do I spread 500 or 600 calories across a fasting day?
Plan two to three small meals and focus on protein, vegetables and fluids. Protein and volume fill you up without delivering many calories. The Cleveland Clinic gives as an example a 250-calorie dish of a piece of white fish with four cups of spinach, or a bowl of chicken and vegetable soup.
| Meal | Budget women (500 kcal) | Budget men (600 kcal) |
|---|---|---|
| First meal | approx. 150 | approx. 200 |
| Second meal | approx. 250 | approx. 250 |
| Snack or soup | approx. 100 | approx. 150 |
The split is a suggestion that we calculated ourselves, not a standard. Check the quantity of your foods with a nutrition app or the label.
A note: a Juice Cleanse is no substitute for a 5:2 fasting day. A cleanse day of the frank. Juice Cleanse is around 650 to 930 kcal depending on variant and therefore above the 5:2 range. More on the comparison: Juice Cleanse vs. 5:2 Intermittent Fasting.
Which recipes suit fasting days?
Fasting-day recipes should be low in calories but high in volume and protein. The amounts below are suggestions for one serving; the calories vary by product and are not documented values.
- Breakfast: 1 boiled egg, 1 tomato, cucumber and a small slice of wholegrain bread.
- Breakfast: 150 g low-fat quark with a handful of berries and a little cinnamon.
- Lunch: Vegetable soup with 100 g chicken breast, carrots, celery and onion.
- Lunch: 150 g white fish from the oven with 200 g broccoli.
- Dinner: Lentil soup, 40 g raw lentils, with plenty of vegetables, no bread with it.
- Dinner: Courgette noodles with tomato sauce and 100 g prawns.
- Snack: Vegetable sticks with 2 tbsp herb quark, or an apple.
Drink at least two litres of water or unsweetened tea with it. Herbal teas and warm water with ginger help against hunger in the evening.
What does the first week of 5:2 look like?
Start gently: in the first week, a single fasting day is enough; in the second, the second one is added. That way you get to know your body before it gets serious. An example for model A:
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Sunday | Plan fasting day, buy ingredients, sleep early |
| Monday | Fasting day: 3 small meals, drink at least 2 litres |
| Tuesday | Eat normally, start with a protein-rich breakfast |
| Wednesday | Eat normally, exercise possible |
| Thursday | From week 2: second fasting day |
Keep a short log in the first weeks: when were you hungry, when did you have a headache, how was your sleep? That shows you whether the fasting days are in the right place. Move them if you regularly have problems on a particular day. If you work irregular hours, put the fasting days on days when you work from home or can organise your time freely, so you can prepare meals calmly.
What does 5:2 do for weight loss?
5:2 can make a calorie deficit easier, but it has no magic of its own. A Cochrane analysis of 22 studies with 1,995 adults found no clinically meaningful weight advantage for intermittent fasting overall compared with usual nutrition counselling. The studies are mostly short and cover different forms, not just 5:2.
In practice, that means: if you manage a deficit more easily with two structured days than with daily calorie counting, 5:2 may work for you. If not, another method is just as good. Why it sometimes stalls is also covered in Intermittent Fasting and Weight Loss.
What side effects and risks does 5:2 have?
The Cleveland Clinic lists tiredness, headaches, concentration problems and dizziness. Nutrients can also fall short if meals are one-sided.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, 5:2 is not suitable for:
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- People with a history of eating disorders
- Underweight people
- People with uncontrolled diabetes or other chronic conditions
If you take medication, especially for diabetes or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor beforehand. If you feel dizzy or get a racing heart, end the fasting day and eat something.
What are typical mistakes with 5:2?
Most problems arise not on the fasting days but around them:
- Started too late: plan dinner beforehand, not only when hunger comes.
- Drank too little: thirst often feels like hunger.
- Fasting days placed back to back: that feels much harder.
- Ate too much after the fasting day: start the next day with a normal, protein-rich meal.
