In short: To make your own Ginger Shot, you press 40 g of ginger, mix the juice with 100 ml of orange juice and a tablespoon of lemon juice and fill everything into a small glass bottle. That makes four shots of 30 ml each. It works without a juicer using a grater and sieve or with a blender. Chilled, you drink the shot within two to three days.
A Ginger Shot takes ten minutes to make. Here you'll find the basic recipe with amounts, ways without a juicer, variations with turmeric, orange and lemon, tips on shelf life and an honest assessment. If you don't have time, take a look at our Ginger Shots.
How do I make my own Ginger Shot? The basic recipe
You need fresh ginger, orange, lemon and a sieve. For four shots of 30 ml each:
| Ingredient | 4 shots | 8 shots |
|---|---|---|
| Ginger, washed or peeled | 40 g | 80 g |
| Orange juice, freshly pressed | 100 ml (2 oranges) | 200 ml (4 oranges) |
| Lemon juice | 1 tbsp | 2 tbsp |
| Optional: black pepper | 1 pinch | 2 pinches |
- Squeeze the oranges and lemon.
- Finely grate the ginger and press it through a sieve or cloth with a spoon until you have the juice.
- Stir together the ginger juice, orange juice and lemon.
- Fill into a clean small glass bottle and chill.
That takes about ten minutes. The amounts are our kitchen values, not a standard. If you want to start mild, use only 20 g of ginger.
How do you make a Ginger Shot yourself without a juicer?
You don't need special equipment. Three ways, ordered by effort:
- Grate and press: Grate the ginger on a fine grater, put it in a sieve and press out firmly with a spoon. For 40 g you need about five minutes.
- Blender and sieve: Blend the ginger with the orange juice and pour through a fine sieve or cloth. Faster, but the appliance has to be rinsed.
- Steeping: Pour hot water over ginger slices, let it steep and mix with orange juice. This gets milder and more tea-like.
The finer the ginger, the more juice is released. Young roots with thin skin are juicier and milder than old, fibrous ones. With organic ginger, thorough washing is enough; otherwise the easiest way to peel the skin is with a spoon.
How do I make the Ginger Shot with a blender or Thermomix?
With a countertop blender, you put ginger, orange juice and lemon in together, blend for a minute and pour the result through a fine sieve. The shot turns out a bit thicker and contains more pulp than if you only press the juice. A Thermomix works the same way, just with clearly specified settings. You'll find the exact settings for the appliance in Ginger Shot in the Thermomix and Countertop Blender.
If you want to work without fresh ginger, you'll find powder variations and a cost comparison in Ginger Shot Powder or Fresh Shot.
What variations are there: with turmeric, orange or lemon?
The basic amount can be varied as you like. All details refer to the recipe for four shots.
| Variation | Change | Taste |
|---|---|---|
| With turmeric | 10 g fresh turmeric or 1/4 tsp powder, pinch of pepper | Earthy, warm |
| Lemon only | Replace the orange juice with 2 tbsp lemon juice and 60 ml water | Fresh, tangy |
| With carrot | Replace half the orange juice with carrot juice | Sweetish, round |
| With mint | Blend in 5 leaves | Fresh |
| Mild | only 20 g ginger | For beginners |
For turmeric and pepper, it's worth a look at The Ginger Turmeric Shot. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out that piperine from pepper can increase the absorption of curcumin. With a kitchen shot containing 10 g of turmeric, that's no cause for concern; with high-dose curcumin capsules it is.
How long does a homemade Ginger Shot keep?
Chilled in a clean glass, we recommend drinking the shot within two to three days. That's a practical recommendation for self-pressed juice that hasn't been preserved, not a lab figure. Freshly pressed orange juice also loses aroma quickly.
For stock, freeze the shot in ice cube trays; one cube per day thaws in the glass. Shake before drinking, because pulp settles. Better to make small batches, label the bottle with the date and store it in the coldest part of the fridge. More in Ginger Shot Shelf Life.
How much Ginger Shot per day makes sense?
There is no official daily amount. One shot a day (30 ml homemade, 60 ml with bought shots) is a common routine. With the recipe above, you take in about 10 g of fresh ginger per shot. That is a kitchen amount and not directly comparable with amounts in studies.
If you're sensitive to heat, drink the shot with breakfast instead of on an empty stomach or dilute it with water. You'll find more on amounts and timing in Ginger Shot: How Much Per Day.
What does a Ginger Shot bring and when is it not for you?
A systematic overview of 109 studies on ginger saw consistent indications mainly for nausea in pregnancy, inflammation markers, metabolism and digestion. For other hoped-for effects, the picture was inconsistent, and only a good third of the studies had high-quality evidence. Protection against colds cannot be derived from it.
Ginger is spicy and can cause heartburn or stomach irritation in sensitive people. With pregnancy, gallstones, blood thinners and other medication, talk to your doctor beforehand. If you drink a shot made with orange juice, you take in fruit sugar, which counts if you drink it often.
Make your own Ginger Shot or buy?
Homemade, you decide amount and heat, and the effort is about ten minutes. A ready-made shot saves the time and is handy on the go. As an alternative to sugary shots, the Verbraucherzentrale recommends a tea made from a piece of ginger root, where you keep an eye on the sugar amount yourself.
