In short: A vegetable Juice Cleanse relies on juices made from vegetables instead of fruit and therefore contains less fruit sugar. With the frank. Juice Cleanse, the Pro level is at 97 g of sugar per day, the Starter level at 160 g. Vegetable juices also contain sugar and hardly any fibre, so the cleanse stays a short phase and not a permanent state. As of October 2026.
If you want to do a Juice Cleanse but don't want to drink a load of fruit sugar every day, you often look at vegetable juices. Here's what that brings and what it doesn't.
What is a vegetable Juice Cleanse?
A Juice Cleanse in which the juices consist mainly of vegetables such as cucumber, celery, carrot, spinach and beetroot. Fruit appears only in small amounts, such as apple or lemon for flavour. The duration is usually three to five days.
The background: according to the DGE, vegetables have a lower energy density than fruit. If you watch your calories, you should favour vegetables because they fill you up with less energy. That applies to whole vegetables. In juice, a large share of the fibre is missing, so the effect is weaker here.
How much sugar is really in a Juice Cleanse?
More than many think, even though no sugar is added. The NHS counts sugar from fruit juices, vegetable juices and smoothies as free sugars. Adults should take in at most 30 g of it per day, and fruit juice at most 150 ml. A Juice Cleanse is clearly above that, even with little fruit.
| frank. Juice Cleanse | Sugar per cleanse day | Carbohydrates | kcal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 160 g | 174 g | 934 |
| Medium | 124 g | 137 g | 799 |
| Pro | 97 g | 108 g | 680 |
Worked example for five days: Starter comes to 5 × 160 g = 800 g of sugar, Pro 5 × 97 g = 485 g. That is 315 g less, so almost 40 percent. The difference is noticeable, but both are still above the NHS guideline. A Juice Cleanse is therefore a time-limited exception. More on the topic in the article Is Fruit Sugar Healthy?
What sets the Pro level apart from Starter?
The Pro level swaps two fruitier juices for more vegetable-based ones. Starter contains Marvellous Greens, The Good Life, The Crocodile, Indian Sundaze, True Romance and Mister White. Medium replaces The Good Life with Lean Machine (courgette, coconut). Pro additionally replaces True Romance (beetroot, apple, carrot, orange, pomegranate, ginger) with The Purist (cucumber, celery).
The result: 97 g instead of 160 g of sugar per day, 680 instead of 934 kcal and 23 g instead of 17 g of protein. Does that mean Pro is the better choice? Not for everyone. If you work a lot or do sport, you may find it harder to get through the day on 680 kcal. We recommend the Pro level more to people who want to keep an eye on sugar. We present all the levels in the article The Different Juices of a Juice Cleanse.
What does a 5-day plan with vegetable juices look like?
With six juices per day, water and tea in between, plus one preparation day and one refeeding day. This is a practical suggestion, not a medical guideline.
| Day | Focus | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Day before | Light food, no alcohol | Cut back on coffee |
| 1 | Arriving | Take it easy, drink plenty |
| 2 | Adjusting | Go for walks, sleep early |
| 3 | Midpoint | Warmth, tea, few appointments |
| 4 | Steady | Light exercise |
| 5 | Finish | Plan the refeeding |
| Day after | Refeeding | Soup, potatoes, vegetables |
For preparation there's the Juice Cleanse Checklist, and for refeeding the article What Is Best to Eat After a Juice Cleanse?
Which vegetable juices can you press yourself?
Three simple recipes for about 500 ml each. Use fresh, washed vegetables and drink the juice promptly.
- Green: 2 cucumbers, 3 sticks of celery, 1 handful of spinach, 1 lemon (peeled), 1 small apple.
- Orange: 4 carrots, 1 piece of ginger (2 cm), 1 orange, juice of half a lemon.
- Red: 1 beetroot (approx. 200 g), 2 carrots, 1 apple, 1 small piece of ginger.
In this list, carrot, beetroot and orange tend to provide more sugar than cucumber, celery and spinach. You'll find more recipes in the article Make Your Own Juice Cleanse.
How do you lower the sugar content in the cleanse further?
With vegetables as the main part, water in between and no extra sweetness. If you want to press your own, you can set the ratio roughly at four parts vegetables to one part fruit. That's a rule of thumb from us and not a study.
- Drink the juices slowly and spread across the day, not all at once.
- Add water or unsweetened tea between the juices.
- Skip honey, agave syrup or sweet additions in tea.
- Move lightly so you use energy evenly over the day.
Our article How Harmful Is Fruit Sugar? explains why the amount and the packaging of the sugar (in whole fruit or in juice) play a role. If you have diabetes or take medication, talk to your doctor about the sugar in the juices before any cleanse.
Do vegetable juices have disadvantages?
Yes, mainly that fibre is missing. A large part of the fibre is lost during pressing. For smoothies, the DGE points to less fibre and plant compounds than in whole fruit, and counts juice only to a limited extent towards the five portions a day: up to two glasses (200 ml each) per week.
For you, that means: a Juice Cleanse doesn't replace a diet but is a short impulse. Afterwards, whole vegetables, raw and cooked, count again, as the DGE advises. So plan before you start what you'll cook in the first days afterwards: a vegetable stew, a big salad and brown rice are simple beginnings. That way you keep not just a feeling of lightness from the cleanse but also a habit of eating more vegetables. If you have kidney problems or are prone to kidney stones, ask your doctor before the cleanse, as some vegetables like spinach or beetroot can play a role then.
Who is a vegetable Juice Cleanse not suitable for?
For pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and people with a weakened immune system. That applies explicitly to the frank. Juice Cleanse. With diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorders or regular medication too, you should get medical advice first.
It's also recommended to drink at least one litre of still water or herbal tea in addition to the juices. If you feel dizzy, get a racing heart or marked weakness, stop the cleanse.
