In short: The carnivore diet consists only of animal foods such as meat, fish and eggs; plant foods are dropped completely. You can lose weight with it in the short term, but there are no robust long-term studies. A 2026 review found only nine human publications and advises against long-term use. Fibre, vitamins, minerals and cholesterol are critical.
Meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus eggs and fish, but no vegetables, no fruit, no bread: the carnivore diet, also called the meat diet or carnivore eating, is a social media trend. We look at what expert sources say about it: what's allowed, what happens with weight loss, what the evidence looks like and which risks remain. This article doesn't replace medical advice.
What is the carnivore diet?
BARMER (a German health insurer) describes it as an extreme way of eating based exclusively on animal foods. Plant foods are excluded completely. Carnivore (English for meat-eater) is an escalation of the low-carb idea: without carbohydrates, the body slips into ketosis. There is no uniform definition. Strict versions eat only meat and water, milder ones allow butter, for example.
What can you eat on the carnivore diet?
According to BARMER, the menu includes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs and bone broth, and in milder versions also butter. Fruit, vegetables, legumes and grains are off limits. The overview shows what belongs in which category.
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Meat and poultry | Fruit and vegetables |
| Fish and seafood | Grains, bread, pasta, rice |
| Eggs | Legumes |
| Bone broth | All other plant foods |
| Butter (in mild versions) | Sugar and sweets |
No uniform meal plan exists; details vary by provider and book. That's why we deliberately don't set a weekly plan.
Can you lose weight on the carnivore diet?
In the short term yes. BARMER writes that giving up carbohydrates leads to ketosis and can lead to weight loss in the short term. Evidence for long-term effects is lacking, and the yo-yo effect looms. The Verbraucherzentrale explains for low-carbohydrate diets that you often lose 2 to 3 kilograms of water at the start. The British Dietetic Association names as a feature of crash diets that the quick weight loss often consists of muscle and fluid rather than body fat.

What do studies say about the carnivore diet?
Little. A scoping review by Lietz, Dapprich and Fischer in the journal Nutrients from 2026 found a total of nine human publications: five case reports, two social media surveys, one exploratory study and one modelling study. According to the authors, the evidence consists of small samples, short time periods and missing control groups.
Reported were, among other things, weight loss, more fullness and in part improved inflammation values. But the authors write that long-term adherence can't be recommended. BARMER also states that there are no robust studies clearly confirming positive effects, and mentions a survey of 2,000 participants that relied on self-reports without medical supervision.
What dangers and nutrient gaps does carnivore eating have?
The review names possible deficits in vitamin C, vitamin D, thiamine, calcium, magnesium, iron, folate and iodine. Fibre intake was far below recommended amounts. The authors also name raised LDL and total cholesterol levels and a possible cardiovascular risk.
- Fibre: BARMER cites the DGE recommendation of 30 grams per day; on carnivore, the value is practically zero. Digestive problems can result.
- Cholesterol: raised LDL cholesterol and with it a higher cardiovascular risk are possible.
- Processed meat: according to BARMER, the WHO classifies it as carcinogenic, and high meat consumption is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer.
- Kidney stones and gout: BARMER also names both as possible risks.
The Verbraucherzentrale also points out that excessive meat consumption is linked to cancer, stroke and heart attack.
For comparison: BARMER cites the DGE meat recommendation as a maximum of 300 grams per week. Someone living carnivore often eats more than that in a single day. That makes the gap between the trend and expert recommendation clear, even if individual people feel subjectively better with it. Such impressions are understandable, but they don't replace data over years.
What's the difference from keto, low carb and paleo?
All three reduce carbohydrates; carnivore goes furthest, because plant foods are dropped too. The Verbraucherzentrale describes quick weight loss at the start with low-carb diets, which initially consists mainly of water, and names a risk of gout attacks and kidney stones with raised uric acid levels. For the Stone Age diet, it describes possible deficiencies in fibre, B vitamins and calcium.
The British Dietetic Association explicitly lists carnivore as an example of plans that avoid or heavily restrict a whole food group, and warns that such approaches are hard to keep up in everyday life and can strain your relationship with food.
Carnivore diet experiences and before and after: how meaningful are they?
Reports with before-and-after photos mostly come from individuals. These are experiences, not studies. The case reports in the review show that some people report weight loss or fewer complaints, but the authors stress the low significance of such data. If you have a condition and are considering carnivore because of it, you shouldn't decide alone, but with your doctor and nutrition counselling.
Who is the carnivore diet not for?
According to the sources checked, it's not a recommendation for everyday life. Anyone with cardiovascular disease, raised blood lipids, kidney disease or gout, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, should not experiment on their own. BARMER sums it up: the clear answer to the question of whether the diet is healthy is no. As a minimum requirement, it cites about 130 grams of carbohydrates per day.
A sensible test for any diet is the question of whether you could still stick with it in a year. If a diet cuts out whole food groups, it needs medical supervision.
If you want to lose weight, everyday approaches such as Intermittent Fasting or a balanced mixed diet have more backing in the professional world. The Verbraucherzentrale names mixed-diet concepts as most suitable for long-term success.
If you want to try it anyway, approach it carefully. Have your blood lipids and kidney values checked by a doctor beforehand and check them again in consultation. Set yourself a short, clearly limited period rather than an open-ended experiment, and watch for warning signs such as persistent tiredness, digestive problems or dizziness. If you miss vegetables, that's an honest signal from your body and not a sign of weakness. Returning to a varied diet is always a good decision.
